He was a tank commander before being invalided out following the Battle of Bryansk in 1941#The key to the success of the AK-47 was, said Kalashnikov, "reliability, effectiveness, simplicity"#For many years Kalashnikov was head of a weapons workshop in the Siberian city of Izhevsk.
